Preface
Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges, with disproportionate consequences for marginalized groups, particularly women and girls in African communities. Despite their vulnerability, the intersection of gender equity and climate change often remains overlooked in policy discussions. This project seeks to bridge this gap by raising awareness of how climate change uniquely impacts African women, highlighting their critical role in creating sustainable solutions. By focusing on inclusive and gender-sensitive policies, this research aims to inspire actionable change and ensure equitable approaches to climate resilience.

My Role: Data Visualization

Problem
Climate change exacerbates existing inequalities, disproportionately affecting women and girls in African communities. These impacts manifest in compromised health, disrupted livelihoods, and diminished access to resources. However, the gendered dimensions of climate change are often ignored, resulting in a lack of targeted interventions to address these disparities. Without accessible and compelling communication tools, such as visualizations, the urgent need for gender-sensitive policies and programs fails to gain the attention it deserves, hindering progress toward equitable climate solutions.
Process
The project began with comprehensive data collection from various credible sources to understand the intersection of climate change and gender in African communities. Data analysis focused on identifying patterns and trends in the effects of climate change on women’s health, livelihoods, and communities. Using the insights, the team created engaging and user-friendly data visualizations, including interactive charts, maps, and graphs. These visualizations were designed to communicate complex information in an easily digestible format. The outputs were further developed into an infographic presentation, a poster, and a video, ensuring the content would resonate with a diverse audience, including policymakers, researchers, and the general public. Emphasis was placed on ensuring accessibility, clarity, and visual appeal to maximize the impact of the findings.
Deliverables
The final deliverables for the project include a comprehensive research report and actionable recommendations for improving the university dining hall experience. The report summarizes key findings from the research and presents a set of design principles and guidelines to inform the development of dining hall improvements. Specific recommendations address critical areas such as expanding menu variety, enhancing food quality, creating a welcoming and engaging ambiance, promoting a stronger social atmosphere, and improving convenience through better layout and service options. These deliverables provide a clear and practical roadmap for universities to transform their dining halls into spaces that are not only functional but also enjoyable and impactful for students.
