Background

The university dining hall is a crucial part of the student experience. However, current research indicates that it has limited impact on the students' experience, and it is mostly used for convenience or obligatory reasons. The objective of this project is to identify specific areas of improvement for the university dining hall experience, including menu variety, food quality, dining hall ambiance, social atmosphere, and convenience.

Objectives

The primary objective of this project is to enhance the university dining hall experience for students. Specific objectives include:

 

  • Conducting research to identify areas of improvement for the dining hall experience

  • Developing design principles and guidelines to inform the development of dining hall improvements

  • Delivering a report with recommendations for improving the university dining hall experience

Approach

The project uses various research methods to collect data from university students, including focus group discussions, surveys, cultural probes, sensory cues, and interviews. The team then analyzed the data collected to identify specific areas of improvement for the university dining hall experience. The project team later developed design principles and guidelines that universities can use to inform the development of dining hall improvements.

Deliverable

The project deliverables include:

  • A research report summarizing the findings of the research, including a set of design principles and guidelines that can be used to inform the development of dining hall improvements

  • Recommendations for enhancing the university dining hall experience, including specific improvements in menu variety, food quality, dining hall ambiance, social atmosphere, and convenience.
